Followers Wanted

I am slowly going about making new requests for readers and followers, especially since I am presently renewing my efforts to find a new home for my reviewing. I figure I would find a new reviewing home for gaming reviews, while I stick with RKYV Online Magazine for comic related content. In any case I always could use New readers, and new followers, the more the merrier.

So please read, please recommend and please follow. Thank you.

I Am The Idiot (a Doctor Who commentary)

What was I thinking. I could have dug into it last year, when I got a new Wii complete with ability to watch YouTube. I could have been absorbing Doctor Who ever since then. But stupid me, I didn't even try to dig into Matt Smith's era as the Doctor until he announced that he is headed out the door at the end of 2013, leaving with one last Christmas Special before turning the TARDIS over to the 12th Doctor.

Stupid me. I had a few years I could have absorbed and assimilated Matt Smith's Doctor Who, but fool that I am I didn't do it until now, at the end of his run... and now honestly is the worst time to realize I will actually miss him as the Doctor. Too late for words, too late for sentiment or protest. Too late, far far too late.

But it wouldn't matter at any rate. It's not the death of Spock all over again, and even if it was no massive fandom campaign will change anything... at best maybe Matt Smith will be like David Tennant, and occasionally return to do Anniversary stuff, or audio dramas for Big Finish. Just as long as he is not a new Christopher E., Still going through his I Am Not Spock phase to the disgusting depth that he snubbed Doctor Who fans by refusing to participate in the 50th Anniversary Doctor Who Special in Late November. I understand his reluctance, but sometimes as a fan one has to just put one's hoof down, unleash FlutterRage, and declare enough is enough. And really, C.E., I had had more than enough of your abusive I Am Not Spock whining. You already horribly mangled one of GI Joe's best villains, Destro, but this is too much!

But C.E. is not my biggest regret, nope, that is reserved for my future failure to qualify for a Matt Smith interview before the end of 2013. I have at least a open the door level of experience, I have been reviewing and interviewing for 11 years, not counting my early years in fandom newsletter publishing. I do have some good interviews on my resume, and been reviewing in the US and the UK... yet somehow that never seems to be enough.

I shouldn't despair but... sigh... it's hard to feel upbeat if you feel you don't measure up. Good reason if any to roll up my sleeves and work harder. Then file my request in August and take my chances. Updates coming soon on my first summer interview requests coming shortly by the way.

Well I may be late to the party, but we have some months to grind a bit of Matt Smith Doctor Who, be it BBC or IDW comics so join me won't you? Content coming up soon!

Summer 2013 Day 23 : Podcasts I Listen To

Another week has come, and another week to wait for that darn laptop. Well while I wait let's check out what podcasts I am presently listening to.

Comics
Former listens - I used to listen to The New 52 Adventures of Superman, but that wrapped recently (one episode shy of its projected end).

Merc with a Podcast (Deadpool)
Formerly The Merc Report before it moved from Cultural Wormhole to Eaths Mightiest Podcast... I don't know why I listen to this since I don't read Deadpool but... Oh well.

Spider-Man Crawlspace
I only just started putting Spider-Man on my retro reviewing schedule, but I have been listening since the end of 2012 and the last Spider Jeopardy episode. Very nice fun and informative cast, even for a dabbler in things Spider-Man like me.

Superman Forever
I haven't been listening for awhile, so I need to get back on track. Presently the only Superman cast I follow.

Multimedia
Bronyville
I used to listen to both this and Pony 411 for all my My Little Pony content... Pony 411 hasn't been seen since April, making this last podcast standing.

Doctor Who Podcast
AKA "you are most welcome"... nice podcast, even if I usually accuse them of being a subsidiary of the BBC and Big Finish. My presently in development "Off Season with the Doctor" was inspired by the content not covered by The Doctor Who Podcast.

Geekshow
Ok, it's not exactly safe for work, but still my favorite source for multimedia pop culture news.

Indycast (Indiana Jones)
Sure, not much happening in the world of Indiana Jones, but still pretty fun and releases twice a month.

Forcecast (Star Wars)
Maybe it's the morbid in me, but I'm listening to hear their reactions to every bad decision made by Disney. Go figure.

Video Games
Idle Thumbs
Just got back into listening to this. As awesome as it was when I listened to the previous series before this one.

RPGamer Podcast
While I don't always agree with this cast, for instance their vehement Microsoft XBox One defense before the full details of Microsoft's stupidity came to light... Still my favorite. Anyway it's on a one month hiatus since two of its hosts got married to each other, but it should be back by Late June.

Next time, what podcasts I would like to see done.

Added RPG Unite blog to the blog list

Added another blog to the list that could use some love, RPG Unite (the RPG & Strategy blog). Please check it out and follow it.

Summer 2013 Day 21 : Equestria Girls - Set Theaters to Fail?

Maybe it's me but with weeks and weeks throughout the summer to put My Little Pony Equestria Girls in theaters did it have to be this week? The same weekend Man of Steel rolls out into theaters? It explains the ultra limited 200 theater release, it's no doubt only appearing in art theaters. Yeah, it's Miyazaki's Spirited Away all over again.

Far be it for me to question Hasbro, but taking their biggest franchise not GI Joe or Transformers and doing this to its first theatrical outing? Unforgivable.

Yes, Equestria Girls is at least original, and the Entertainment Weekly trailer hyped a decidedly Star Trek IV feel with Twilight struggling to understand the human world, let alone being human, in her quest to recover the big crown core element of the elements of harmony... only this is not what Bronies wanted out of a first Friendship is Magic movie. A Brony's idea of a FIM movie would probably not be original, but it would be all pony, what the first FIM movie should have been. This Equestria Girls idea would have been a great mini series in the vein of Clue, with contests and multimedia events tied about it promoting its possibilities as a full series, but ultimately it should have been its own release and not a FIM movie, let alone the first FIM movie.

So odds are severely poor that Equestria Girls is playing in a theater within 100 miles of you, but if your still playing the Gameloft game, review coming soon on Raise This Village blog, then your interested in the new update... whenever that finally comes out. It should be out now, in fact, but I am still waiting for the update... go figure.

Past the movie itself I would have embraced a Equestria Girls IDW comic adapt, only no such thing was made. Missed opportunity.

As soon as that update comes out I will be back, as well as for reviews of both the main and micro series of the FIM IDW comic. Stay tuned.

Summer 2013 Day 18 : Next Issue Submissions

After last issue I have been working on my next submissions. My first thought was to grind an article on Matt Smith leaving Doctor Who, which might fit the light content but I don't really have much to say at this time. Another thought was on what was going on so far concerning Doctor Who's 50th Anniversary. A third idea? Equestria Girls.. I have to pick one and submit it.

Reviewwise I am even less certain. I got stuff to review... but I turned in stuff months ago and none of it was used. Eh... I don't know but I am going to write 2 reviews to submit all the same, just in case.

So a commentary and two reviews, more details coming as I write it up, stay tuned.

Summer 2013 Day 17 : The Waiting Game... sigh.

Yup. Days have passed and I am still waiting on the laptop. What a revolting development, especially since tomorrow is rare useless Hawaiian holiday King Kamehameha day (insert Goku from Dragon ball Z performing Kamehameha here). If there was ever a good reason why Hele On deserves no more money, let alone doubling prices to ride the bus, it's this.

If at least Hele On was improving the bus schedule, adding more bus arrivals a day or Sunday/Holiday bus shuttle schedules (shuttles don't run on Sunday and holidays) then I can justify a decent 50% rate hike... but double the rates for the same so-so service? Come on, be serious.

So won't be checking up on the laptop again for a few days... disappointingly... oh well, stay tuned for updates though I am working on the first batch of New 52 reviews, starting off with Action Comics #19 (must buy digital version), Supergirl #19, Superman #18-#19 and Teen Titans #19. Coming soon.

Summer 2013 Day 16 : Travels with the Hele Hold Up Bus

I think I may know my fate regarding work next school year when I get my June 15th check, finding paying work as a reviewer is slow work, and I am still waiting on the laptop... the last thing I need is for the shuttle rates to go up, but they're going up.

Hele On, the bus company that handles public transportation, announced yesterday that they will be raising bus rates a whopping 100% with the cost jumping from $1 to $2... seriously? They don't do that over at The Bus, public transportation on Oahu, and they run far more buses for longer each and every day and Sundays. But that is what we get with privatized public transportation. Privatization. Sucks for medical, transportation, social services, everything.

And here I thought this month's flank ache would be waiting for the laptop to arrive. Thanks alot Hele On. Thanks. Oh well, like I said on Facebook everyone on the neighbor islands need to get on this and email the heck out of Hele On and your local county council member over this nonsense with Hele On. If they need a bit more maybe it would work if it wasn't a 100% doubling of ticket prices... my hope is that bus passes remain a bargain lessening the impact if higher prices... stay tuned for updates.

RKYV The Podcast?

To be honest it has been an idea I have occasionally kicked about, but ultimately shelved due to the fact it would just be me doing it.

I am pretty sure I may be the only podcaster working with Mr. Pare, and if there are anymore they would be focused on their own work. Not the most constructive environment to doing a podcast based on an internet publication if I am the only one doing the podcast... maybe at a future point I might find a few fellow writers to work with on it but for now... idea considered and once again shelved for now.

Pitching article on new comics coverage to the Editor for his considrration, see if it sticks. Stay tuned

RKYV Issue #55 now available!

Hey good news! RKYV Issue #55 is now out and available, so google it now and check it out. Next update I will remember to write down some sites for you to check out (for tablet owners make sure you got Adobe Reader from your app store to download a d and read New Issues).

That is the good news. Bad news for me I only have my commentary in it... my kinda old dated commentary from months ago... sigh. Well working on a new Stop the Madness right now along with fresh reviews that, hopefully, make the cut this time out... stay tuned.

New Review Update

Still looking for a new home, but while I am looking I have a bit to highlight as sample reviews reviews in my submissions, as well as here in full.

Action Comics (DC Comics)
Part of the f our subscriptions I am reviewing for That New 52 Smell podcast. Wish my subscription started with #19 instead of #20, but I can always get the digital issue for review.

Doctor Who Series III (IDW)
Started as print reviews, I am now grinding through this as digital reviews. Presently up to Issue #6 with three issues to pick up (Issue #9 starting off a four parter with... ugh... the Hypothethical Gentleman from Issue #1-#2).

Doctor Who Prisoners of Time (IDW)
Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who, each issue featuring each of the 11 incarnations of the Doctor.

Continuity Paradox
So... if the BBC really went and made John Hurt the true 9th Doctor... what does that mean for September when the 9th Doctor`s number is up? Will it be Christopher E. (I thought remembering Straczynski`s last name was a pain) or will it be John Hurt in his first adventure predating the 50th Anniversary episode in November... I am betting IDW is out of the loop with the BBC so.... C.E.

My Little Pony Friendship is Magic (IDW)
Digitally I have been keeping up with pony. Right now up to Issue #7 and the Fluttershy Micro Series issue. The rest of summer should be excellent with a two issue Big Mac slash background pony story arc in Issue #9-#10, and secondary cast Micro Series starting with The Cutie Mark Crusaders in Issue #7.

Supergirl (DC Comics)
Just started getting the issues, and post H`el on Earth she is being teamed up with... herself, aka Earth-2 Power Girl (who just got a new costume).

Superman (DC Comics)
Nuff said. Happy 75th Superman.

Teen Titans (DC Comics)
So I just started getting my subscription issues... and I am not too excited about it. Check, even Titans fan Linkara has said that this present Titans title is just OK, and really I am just reading it to have a Superboy title in my reviews... oh well.

I do want to add titles... but when will I do that? Good question... stay tuned.

Summer 2013 Day 3 : Looking for Work

Well, Memorial Day is done and a new work week begins anew. So for me? Time to get back on the trail of a new reviewing job. Since I have not heard back from my Editor over at RKYV in like forever now would be a pretty good time to find a new reviewing job. And that means doing quite a bit to get that done.

I have to get all these blogs updating on a regular basis with contents and updates, looking for new people to follow my reviews as well as have active sites for future Editors to look at my work.

I have to get my podcasting completely back on track and going forward again.

I have to be as active a reviewer as possible, get s one fresh work and exposure to add to my resume.

The first step is rolling along slowly but surely. Step two is waiting for a vital piece of hardware, while step 3... is a work in progress. Lots to do, lots more if I want to impress a future Editor, but all worth it once I nail down a new reviewing job. All fine and all, except for the rather daunting truth that... nobody seems to be hiring at the moment.

A bit of a setback, but that won't stop me from forging ahead all the same. Stiff upper lip and all that. Hopefully this little ongoing narrative in my summer work I'd not s narrative that goes on for too long but, say it with me now, stay tuned.

Summer 2013 Day Zero : Comics I Am Reviewing

As the summer kicks off I put together my content and figure out what I am reviewing during. the summer.Admittedly I need to secure a bit more content yes, but here is a bit of what I am looking at this summer.

That New 52 Smell
At the start of the summer I am presently only reviewing 4 titles. I am going to to try and trade off my old XBox Original for 1-2 subscriptions since Microsoft is on the road to self destruction with the XBox One... Updates as I work on that. In the meantime I am reviewing presently Action Comics, Supergirl, Superman and Teen Titans. Need more, yup, but that is the topic of a future update.

IDW Reviews
Picked up a batch of Doctor Who (Series III) for review, going to stick to that... but to what end? One idea I am considering is a podcast that covers lesser discussed and reviewed content. IDW comics, audio dramas not made by Big Finish including ponified Doctor Whooves, stuff like that. Stay tuned for updates.

That is only the beginning, but at least it is a good start. Updates upcoming.

That New 52 Smell 5/15

Yes, I actually have an update. Surprise?

As May rolls along issues of the New 52 subscriptions are just rolling in like mad... well one more issue then we will get four issues a month until I add on to subscriptions. Anyway so far here is what I am covering next That New 52 Smell, the first episode covering new content.

Issue #18 - We start off with the first issue to arrive in the mail, Superman #18, and the menace of... something. Guest starring Orion of the New Gods and the New 52`s most villainous bobble headed human... seriously.

Issue #19 - This month`s issues we look at the first Andy Diggle issue of Action Comics in #19 (still waiting on it), Super girl power with Power Girl in Supergirl #19, and Wonder Woman in Superman #19 while we look at Teen Titans #19.

As I roll into the summer I am at a bit of a quandary... I don't know if I can add any more subscriptions to the cast but we will see, stay tuned.

As for the next cast? Actually I am presently waiting on progress on this whole laptop scenario going on right now, so when progress is made on that there will be an update but for now... waiting on progress. Sigh. Stay tuned.

Start of the Week 5/12

Well a whole new week is starting off so let's see what is happening.

Despite the fact I said I was headed back to work with RKYV Online... weeks have passed and I haven't heard from my Editor Mr. Pare in -- well, months now. So while I hope to hear from him soon I am going to be looking around for another writing position elsewhere. Updates as I dive into submitting content all about.

Incoming review content I have a few things to review.

- Superman wise I have 2 issues of the New 52 (Superman #18-#19) to review, in That New 52 Smell once I get should of that laptop and start working on casts anew. Over in This Old DC Swag I am looking at at Superman The Sunday Funnies HC, classic Golden Age Superman from the newspapers in a series of content.

- Got some random Spider-Man issues coming in to review in This Old Comic Addict. More on it once I get the issues in.

- Six week waiting period is up for Action Comics and Teen Titans, adding them to the list of subscriptions I am waiting on. So far I have received 2 issues of Superman, and that is that for now... during the Week I talk about my concerns over the missing Supergirl subscription, and knock on wood maybe a response to my latest inquiry from DC Comics.

- Finally working to revive Equestria This Week, covering the first story arc of the comic and Twilight Sparkle and Rainbow Dash of the Micro Series... oh, and catching. up with audio dramas and favorite youtube series, and the latest series to come to a screeching halt midrun much to my dismay.

Well time to get to work.

Getting back on track

Well spending the weekend getting back on track doing all these blogs. For this blog I have quite a few things to get back on track with.

Acquiring a used laptop so I can get back on track with the comic podcasts. Also with writing content for RKYV... only I haven't heard from Mr. Pare in forever. That is one of the things I will be looking into this month. Another being me looking into my presently missing subscription to Supergirl (That New 52 Smell).

So first thing first getting back on track with daily posting all over. Stay tuned.

KISS KIDS Coming Fall 2013

Personally I blame Jim Henson. Check out the cut (with safety scissors) and paste (with non toxic glue) info below.

Ah, the simple pleasures of just being a kid. Lemonade stands, little league games, advanced fort building, rocking the faces off of millions of screaming fans all over the world while thwarting the plans of your evil school Principal.

If a couple of those cherished childhood memories sound unfamiliar, that’s because they can only be found in KISS Kids, the new series starring the pint-sized rock gods! Join Starchild, Li’l Demon, Spacey, and Catkid as they get into trouble and kick out the jams in strips featuring familiar characters and settings from KISS lore. Helmed by KISS series writers Chris Ryall and Tom Waltz with fun, expressive art by Jose Holder (Mars Attacks The Real Ghostbusters), KISS Kids promises to be a treat for fans of all-ages!

“KISS is used to rocking and rolling all night and partying every day, but back when they were little’uns, those things only happened around nap time,” said Chris Ryall, also IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “This series will appeal to kids and Kiss fans of all ages, as we see the school-age band engage robots, evil teachers, other students, and much more, all filtered through the KISS lens. Beth, the school’s Doctor Love, the snooty Torpedo Girls, the bratty “Wicked” Lester, nefarious Principal Elder… they’re all here for this accessible, funny, and appealing new series.”

The new KISS Kids series, coming this fall, is being previewed in the form of a one-page strip on the back cover of all four issues of this spring’s Kiss Solo series. Fans will get their first real look at theKiss Kids on April 10, when Kiss Solo #1: The Demon by Ryall and artist Angel Medina is released.

"Rock and Roll All Nite….and Potty Every Day," added the L’il Demon himself, Kiss founding member,Gene Simmons.

This fall, there’s only one place for proof positive that whether you’re a Starchild or a Demon, there’s nothing better than rocking and rolling all night and reading comics every day!

If you told me to get hyped about this BEFORE I learned about Teen Titans Go replacing Young Justice? Well.... maybe. But not now. I'm burned out on kidified versions of just about anything. Go figure. But if you want to check it out? Please do. I think I will get the digitial #1 in the Fall and review it, so stay tuned for a review in the future.

That New 52 Smell : The First Unpacking Update

That New 52 Smell
The First Unpacking

Six weeks later and the first subscription issue finally arrived. My first review issue... and subsequently I finally had a few questions answered.

- Subscription issues start mailing after six weeks HOWEVER that only means they mail on the week they come out... which may mean it might take extra weeks for some first issues to mail.

- Oh yes, they seemingly come out a month behind. Its April... and I got March's issue.

- And they mail one issue at a time. That's good. Means I dont have to wait two months between reviews... I dont know why I was even worried about that. Really.

So April is going to be a slow month. This episode coming? Superman Issue No 18, featuring fallout from H'el on Earth, the realization the artwork reminds me of manga artwork which reminds me of the time Superman was drawn that way for a time in the 90's as a sales gimmick... and the threat of Hector Hammond, the new 52s worst ever evil bobble headed human... I mean wow! Just look at the size of his head! Sheesh... oh, and that is only the tip of the iceberg in this first ever New 52 Superman review.

After that? Waiting on Supergirl to come in. Hopefully not too long of a wait.

May is a little busier. Besides the second issues of Supergirl and Superman we also get the first issues of Action Comics and Teen Titans, doubling the monthly reviews to four.

For all intents and purposes it looks like a major trade will be resolved. So that means June and probably July will see the last of the first year content rolling in, setting the pace of the series in 2013 to 2014..

It took awhile, but we are finally ready to get That New 52 Smell rolling full speed ahead. And that can only be a good thing.

So how will we close up the first year of content? Good question... I am still fudging abit on the end admittedly. That is still abit up in the air.

Wonder Woman is still on the list most certainly, that is scheduled, but how to end? Hmm... I was thinking of several possible scenarios... my mind is basically stuck at this point, at a indecision moment, and while there is a bit of time left to resolve it... that time is running out so... what to end with. That I will save for an upcoming update.

So right now we will focus on upcoming episodes.

- Supergirl episode
While I am hoping that we will see the first issue arrive today (April 20th)... it might not. So first issue coverage coming soon.

There is also the digital content, but that is a topic of another update... stay tuned.

Evil Is All Thumb... prints?

Apparently evil is all thumbprint or something... I don't know. Have you some cut and paste for more info!

IDW is pleased to announce a new project from the Eisner-nominated writing team behind The CapeJoe Hill and Jason Ciaramella. Based on Hill’s original novella and featuring covers and art by superstar newcomer Vic MalhotraTHUMBPRINT is a twisted three-issue tale of fear, terror, and indelible remorse.

When Private Mallory Grennan is dishonorably discharged from the US Army, she hopes to start a new life back home, far away from the things she’d seen and done in Abu Ghraib prison. Mal’s crimes, committed beneath a harsh Arabian sun, throw a shadow long enough to reach all the way to the United States. What started there, will end here – in blood. Over THUMBPRINT’s three gripping issues, fans will truly feel what it’s like to be haunted… and hunted.

"Bringing THUMBPRINT to life was a challenge for me,” said writerJason Ciaramella. “Not because the prose was particularly difficult to adapt, but because the themes the story explores are haunting, and deeply disturbing. I had to step out of myself in order to capture the true horror of it without letting my personal agendas seep in."

Author Joe Hill adds, “I was blown away by Jason’s work on The Cape, and wanted more.THUMBPRINT is right in his wheelhouse: Jay has a feel for the psychological flaws that lead a basically good person down the wrong path. And no one writes action quite like Jay – he turns brutality into surreal comedy and back again faster than a magician turning a scarf into a dove. Add to that an opportunity to work with an artist like Vic Malhotra – who draws with a severe grace, and brings to mind the work Mazzucchelli was doing in Batman: Year One – and I think we’ve got all the ingredients for something that can really explode off the page.”

The first issue will also feature a variant cover by Vincent Chong, the award-winning artist of theTHUMBPRINT novella. When THUMBPRINT hits stands this June, fans of the Eisner-winning Locke & Key can expect another in the long line of haunting thrills concocted by Hill and Ciaramella.

JOE HILL'S THUMBPRINT #1 of 3: (FC, 32 pages, $3.99). In stores 6/19/13.

Let's see about getting back to a daily update a day, huh? That'd be good.

That New 52 Smell - First Unpacking Minus Five and Digital?

Well as of today (April 4th) we are almost to the six week mark for the first two 52 titles for the cast, Supergirl and Superman, depending on when the first issues finally show up in the boxy box. So waiting on that before... oh wait, my stupid MP3 Player I was recording on is broken screen wise... at long last... meaning I have to do the casts another way. Sigh. What a bother. Well while I work on that I have an update in another vein, possibly reintergrating digital content for reviews.

I am finally going to, this year's tech add on, add a tablet for review purposes of digital comics. Odds are I am going to add the Kindle Fire, and probably make Comixology my home for digital... but that is in a future update. Stay tuned.

Another add should be in the handheld dept, but that's for the RPG blog. Stay tuned.

Hmm... short updates. So waiting on the first unpacking and I will update when it shows up.

Update - Looks like my little MP3 is working again OK so doing some cast recording this weekend.

FYI : Live Update (answers about DC Comics)

Usually I script these out and cut and paste them up, but today I am writing it up live. Check out my fYI post on http://www.thisoldcomicaddict.blogspot.com for the first half of this so I don't have to repeat the info I did there here).

So far no progress has been made on my mail showing up according to the USPS site... but I should be doing both OMGComics and This Old Comic Addict by this weekend... yeah, definitely by then I should be doing both.

Finally got an answer on how long it takes to get my first issues from DC Comics for That New 52 Smell. Six weeks. It should be six weeks, and I am halfway through that so the unpacking episode (first) should be in April. That means once the next subscription(s) are made they will be unpacked for the first time... in May. Incredibly slow, yes, but at least it gives the cast (and listeners) something to look forward to.

So I want to thank the source of the information... Comic Book Resources from their forum board.
Not DC Comics. A comic book forum.
Subsequently I think I will be doing abit of that on the cast. The biggest info and breaking news... from invisible third person fans from forum boards on the internet.

DC Comics. Motto 2013 Edition... Go (bleep) off.
Thanks DC Comics.

Maybe I went too fast in giving DC Comics a cast. Maybe I should have done a MARVEL cast...

MARVEL Comics Motto 2013 Edition. Go (bleep) off.
Yeah... that looks better. Sigh.

Well.... at least we'll get news... eventually.

So updates shortly on the unpacking episodes and a new That New 52 Smell Episode... mostly to announce the next step in subscriptions and the next title locked in for reviews (starting in May) and more Spectre. Stay tuned for updates.

Podcast Update March 17th 2013

New podcasts are now out and available!

Spill It Trailers Episode 6
New trailers gone over mid month including the all ages appropriate trailer to Evil Dead, the trailer to Stephanie Meyer's The Hose, as well as trailers to 7500, The Canyons, Aftershock and The Brass Teapot.

That New 52 Smell Episode Zero
Even though The New 52 Adventures of Superman still has 4 episodes to go (3 no doubt as this releases or soon as we wait for Episode 42) I am getting That New 52 Smell up and running.

Introduction, DC Comics and me public relations wise, and the whole Orson Scott Card thing with Adventures of Superman... and, for context, we check in with Corrigan (aka the Spectre) and his mid 90's crisis over the topic at hand. Review of the issue of The Spectre (September 1997 if I remember right) is had here. Check it out!

New episode in two weeks, with hopefully the first New 52 DC review... and a very mid 90's Spectre Christmas!

TOCA Journal 1 : That Unboxing Episode

TOCA Journal - Waiting for Something Man

These days alot of my podcasts seems to rotate around the concept of... waiting.

And not just That New 52 Smell either in terms of subscriptions made or in negotiation. I also mean waiting for trades for This Old Comic Addict, or even This Old DC Swag... and even for Pocket Gamer.

Yup. Waiting to exhale, and do unboxing episodes, is universal. Boring and universal.

The longest wait is for two boxes sent for a giant trade. The unboxing of these two? Most definitely an episode of This Old Comic Addict will revolve around the unboxing. But really. It was sent via ground, and the longest part is the long ship trip between California and Hawaii... still it is almost here, so recording shortly.

Another trade, another opening episode for This Old Comic Addict. Not nearly quite as massive as what I am expecting in the first trade, yes, but still vitally important. This trade will provide fresh review content for my RKYV reviews, being fresher stuff. Timing wise this will probably arrive on a weekend I usually record an episode of This Old Comic Addict so that works out well for me.

But moving things is not just for This Old Comic Addict. Skipped a week of Waiting To Recharge over at http://www.rpgunite.blogspot.com  because I didnt have much to report on... this week I should have abit to say in that regard.

Finishing a trade for subscriptions for That New 52 Smell... still hoping for a positive outcome. Stay tuned.

So... anything else? Nothing to report on for now, but all of this does bring up the topic of unboxing episodes... who gets them.

Top of the list is This Old Comic Addict, and This Old DC Swag, two series that dig into the past is full of potential for unboxing episodes now and then.

I thought we would do more unboxing for a newer cast not That New 52 Smell... maybe we still could do that. Once I am of a higher level as a reviewer.

Finally less unboxing and more unveiling everytime a new subscription issue arrives. Something that will become more and more commonplace as the review titles all fall into place one by one. Still I wonder if, over time, we might not also see a more traditional unboxing of review content over time, and the advent of donations or... heaven forbid... finally meeting DC Comics criteria as a reviewer worthy of access.

Hmm... I think I will keep track every weekend of incoming trades and potential donations for unboxing episodes... starting next week. So stay tuned!

Daily News : IDW Edition

Transformers : Monstrosity is here in digital comic format!

Have you some cut and paste about this new Transformers series you can check out from your favorite source for digital comics (which mine used to be the PlayStation Store... before they killed it outright and stopped doing it altogether... thanks Sony... now gimme the money you owe me for all the stuff I purchased that you killed!)

"Hot on the heels of TRANSFORMERS: AUTOCRACY, IDW Publishing is pleased to bring fans of the fierce Cybertronians a sequel with TRANSFORMERS: MONSTROSITY! The twelve-chapter, digital-first series, from the veteran creative team of writers Chris Metzen and Flint Dille and interior and cover artist Livio Ramondelli, is packed with the explosive robot action that made the first series a roaring critical, commercial, and fan success.

Taking place in the early days of the legendary War for Cybertron, MONSTROSITY tells the story of two battle-hardened commanders: OPTIMUS PRIME of the virtuous AUTOBOTS, and MEGATRON of the villainous DECEPTICONS. Tensions are high as both sides carve out their next stands in the battle for Cybertronian supremacy. Which side will gain the edge? Whose resolve will crumble? And what terrible secrets lay in store for our embattled heroes?

“MEGATRON’S been betrayed,” says editor John Barber, “and he finds himself starting a quest that takes him to some very familiar places—but thanks to Chris, Flint, and Livio, the familiar is made new again! And while MEGATRON is rebuilding his life, GRIMLOCK is butting heads with OPTIMUS PRIME, and leading his renegade DINOBOTS away from the darkest secret of their lives.”

There’s only one way to answer all these questions and more, and that’s by picking up TRANSFORMERS: MONSTROSITY #1 via the Transformers Comics and IDW Comics apps, Comics by comiXology, the iBookstore, or online at read.idwpublishing.com."

That New 52 Smell : The Sound of DC Comics... Not Talking...

That New 52 Smell Update
"Ask DC Comics... quietly..."

The work to get ready for That New 52 Smell rolls ever forward. Slowly but surely, one step at a time ahead we go. 20% of subscriptions is set... but a decided error on my part is slowing up another 20%... and quite frankly I will be lucky if I at least lock in 10% at the end of this trade.

20% set for April, 20% set for May and hopefully the last 30% along the way... so a complete schedule by June. Maybe 7 episodes in by the time we are at 100%. That means things will be a bit slow at the start, taking a few episodes to get fully rolling full speed ahead as we pass Memorial Day and roll into summer... but still with Episode 1 about to be recorded I still need content. And we do have abit to talk about... yes, even with only 20% of titles "secured" and all while I wait for the first issues to arrive in the mail we do still have abit to talk about... surprise!

Introduction to the series, and the whole plan of review by subscriptions. DC ending Green Lantern and Young Justice, and the coming of Beware the Batman. The whole Orson Scott Card thing on Adventures of Superman. Just in Episode 1 alone. But this is just the start... hmmm... well I am curious. When I am subscribed to a DC Comics title how long does it take before you get your first issue? Sure, over time I will learn this by comparison as each title rolls in... but I couldnt help but ask DC Comics myself. But not as a reviewer, just a simple question with no strings attached. Pretty simple, right? Well, I asked this yesterday and waited for a reply, and waited. Days passed and nothing.

Well as I said a few times past back in Early February I contacted DC Comics as part of a batch of publishers I contacted with questions concerning reviewer policy. They never contacted me. To me I felt this meant I had more growing to do as a reviewer. Work harder, grow as a reviewer and one day I will be mature enough. With hard work and determination it will be possible.

But to not even answer a simple question? What. I dread to say it but I can easily see the worst in this. Maybe I just shouldn't ask DC Comics any questions period. I dont know, but for some reason I think DC Comics has me on a spam or block list if even the simplest emails go unanswered. Anyway because of that I might do an Ask DC Comics section, if only to point out how DC alienates me. Maybe I will also do a Why I dont work at Superman Homepage section... spoiler alert... I tried finding a home there once!

As we wrap up the update the subscription plan... is moving even slower after one vital lynchpin... Ugh. Dont want to think about it. At least 20% progress has been made so... hopefully I will be at 40% at the end of March... 30% at least. See you next update, as I cast Episode 1 this weekend and get the cast off the ground. That will be the focus of the next update. Stay tuned... now I am off to record Episode 1... hopefully... see you next update.

I don't know what's going on... but it's something about monkeybrains... yummy? Have you some cut and paste!

" IDW Publishing and Monkeybrain Comics are please to announce that beginning this June, fans of Monkeybrain’s popular digital comics will be able to find some of their favorite titles collected in print!

Kicking off with Chris Roberson and Dennis Culver’s EDISON REX in June, this new partnership will see a number of the critically acclaimed and wildly imaginative flood of comics Monkeybrain has produced extend their reach into comic shops and onto the shelves of fans everywhere!

“Since we first conceived of Monkeybrain Comics,” Allison Baker says, “our goal has always been to make it as easy as possible for readers to enjoy our titles, in as many formats as possible. IDW has impressed us for years with their high production values, quality content, and business savvy, and we’re delighted that they’ll be helping our creators achieve that goal.”

“Monkeybrain was founded because we love comics,” Chris Roberson adds. “And thanks to IDW, we’ll have even more comics to love.”

The schedule will continue on with AMELIA COLE AND THE UNKNOWN WORLD by writers Adam P. Knave and D.J. Kirkbride and artist Nick Brokenshire premiering in August and titles like Dan Goldman’s RED LIGHT PROPERTIES, Kevin Church and Grace Allison’s WANDER, and many more to follow.

“Monkeybrain has brought in top creators to launch some of the best original digital comics around,” states Jeff Webber, IDW’s VP of Digital Publishing. “This is a great opportunity for new readers to discover these titles in their local comic shops or bookstores. And the fans that have read the digital versions can add a fine printed collection to their shelves.”

Monkeybrain has provided an innovative platform for creators to tell vivid, daring stories, and IDW is beyond excited to join in on the fun and put more great comics into fans’ collections!"

Start of the Week March 11th

Start of the Week
March 11th

Start of a brand new week so let's see what is happening.

Postal Progress Report
Seeing how a few podcasts depend on what is incoming lets see what we are looking forward to this week.

Random Comic Boxes
Well not so much random as a smathering of different companies, this is the fuel for This Old Comic Addict. So... are we making progress? As of last Saturday it reached the West Coast so... its making progress! Yay!

That New 52 Smell Update
Well splitting the work up into three months should insure that the full 10 review load is secured, and as of this trade March's trade schedule is wrapping up... knock on wood.

The trade has quite abit to go in order to insure everything is on the up and up, but with any good fortune the trade is making progress... and reaches fulfillment before the end of the month completeing March's schedule and filling 40% of the pickups.

Well... one step at a time. Stay tuned.

There is one more trade but it provides review material to my work with RKYV Online... once it publishes and I am cranking out material for it full throttle... I am honestly stymied though. I thought the title would be rolling apace by now, but over a month has passed and so far I am rather... well, at a loss. I am ready to grind out fresh content. Just waiting for the next deadlines to begin submitting in earnest. Oh well, stay tuned.

Well we talked about podcast progress... how about progress on a upcoming review topic?

Looking to do The Red Star review
And I almost got it all! Finding my copy of the first Trade Paperback helped loads, but I am still short a few issues! I am looking to trade for the following, my list of comics I am trading with is up at www.ihaveplanet.com.

The Red Star (Image)
Issue 6 & 7.5

The Red Star (Archangel)
Volume II Issue 3 & 4

Will also trade for the second and third TPB if need to.

Well as I write this up it's actually Sunday (a day early) so I should go grind out a few podcasts for the weekend and see you next update. Bye!

Transformers : Art of the Fall of Cybertron Limited coming!

Got oodles of money that you just don't know what to do with, and your a big Transformers fan?
Can I have some?
Anyway IDW has a new expensive limited to talk about so let's go right to the cut and paste!

IDW Limited announced its plan today to offer a deluxe limited edition of TRANSFORMERS: Art of the Fall of Cybertron. Based on the TRANSFORMERS brand from Hasbro, the book is a collection of the art and set descriptions for the smash-hit videogame of the same name, produced by High Moon Studios and published by Activision. The limited-edition book will be offered in a special IDW Red Label edition complete with slipcase, new cover and a portfolio of 10 limited-edition lithographs. (http://idwlimited.com/series/transformers/transformers-art-of-the-fall-of-cybertron-red-label.html)

“Fans of the comics and of the games should be able to come together over this book. It’s got absolutely breathtaking art paired with backstory and details that will really help immerse you into Cybertron and the two factions at war there,” says John Barber, IDW TRANSFORMERS editor and writer. “This is the kind of book you display on your coffee table and keep coming back to. You can easily lose an afternoon (or several) admiring the detailed work seen here.”

This edition of TRANSFORMERS: Art of the Fall of Cybertron will be presented in an exclusive to IDW Limited cover and housed in a custom-built slipcase featuring unique art elements. Limited to only 250 copies, each book will include a special hardcover portfolio containing 10 limited-edition lithographs.

Art of the Fall of Cybertron chronicles the development of the sequel to 2010’s TRANSFORMERS: War for Cybertron by High Moon Studios. The game was an award-winning success, portraying the world of the TRANSFORMERS in a way that hadn’t been done in previous adaptations, and the sequel built upon that success to reach even greater heights.

This title is the second limited-edition TRANSFORMERS release from IDW Limited and comes on the heels of their TRANSFORMERS: The IDW Collection (Vol. 1), a book that experienced almost instant sell-outs in both Blue and Black Label categories. Autobot fans and Decepticon enthusiasts will have plenty more to covet in the coming months as well.

TRANSFORMERS: ART OF THE FALL OF CYBERTRON DELUXE LIMITED EDITION (RED-$100.00; 200 pages; 9” x 12”; hardcover) is now available for pre-order."

You know, if you have $100 lying around to spare... seriously it's like IDW doesn't even know America is still trying to recover from the recession, which might be hampered if people lose their jobs to sequester... thanks Republicans, who needs terrorists when we have YOU to terrorize us. Losers.

Daily News IDW Edition

IDW Teams Up With Cartoon Network!... yay?

Well... somebody had to, really, they are not going to be making new friends over at DC Comics (the last company to publish their stuff) with axing Young Justice and Green Lantern so, well, there you go. And yes, I doubt this was the reason why they did that lest they would have completely cancelled DC Nation and said this Fall it's... I don't know... IDW Kids on DC Nation's old time slot or something. I still think it's content that killed it but we'll see. Anyway... here's some cut and paste, enjoy!

"IDW Publishing and Cartoon Network Enterprises today announced that the two companies have forged a partnership to produce and release comics based on many of the network’s popular and iconic classic characters!

“Many of these Cartoon Network shows have only grown in popularity since they originally aired,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief, “and we’re excited to be able to offer new iterations of the characters in comic-book form alongside both our planned reprint material and also some new animated ventures Cartoon Network has planned, too. There’s a wealth of fun properties to play with here, and we’ve already got some unique things in mind for them.”

Beginning in 2013, fans can look forward to seeing the returns of beloved characters from classic Cartoon Network shows including THE POWERPUFF GIRLS, BEN 10, DEXTER'S LABORATORY, SAMURAI JACK, JOHNNY BRAVO, GENERATOR REX, and many more.

Not only will IDW be teaming with high-caliber creators from the world of comics to publish new adventures featuring tons of Cartoon Network’s characters, but fans can also look forward to a variety of reprints of previous incarnations of Cartoon Network comics.

“We are excited to partner with IDW to bring some of our most beloved and iconic brands and characters to life for fans of all ages,” said Pete Yoder, Vice President of Consumer Products, North America for Cartoon Network Enterprises. “It will be a great opportunity to revisit and expand many of these great stories told in comic-book form, and we’re excited to see what the creative team at IDW comes up with.”

While details have yet to be announced on the specific titles and creative teams, IDW and Cartoon Network are  thrilled to be heading into 2013 with this new partnership and great new comics hitting comic shops soon!"

Hmph. My sister has a full collection of Powerpuff Girls and Dexter's Lab from the old DC Comics era, so Cartoon Network is... hmm... reaching hard here to make a buck. Still I guess we can give it a chance. Stay tuned for updates here eh?

Daily News : Valiant Edition

Daily News : Valiant Edition
And then came... Doctor Mirage!

Well it looks like we are finally up to date as word comes of the first appearance in the modern era Valiant of Doctor Mirage. I have to admit I kinda missed Doctor Mirage's appearance in the 90's era Valiant so this will all be rather new to me... so here you go, take this cut and paste!

"The Associated Press today announced that Dr. Mirage, Valiant's preeminent psychic investigator and supernatural hero, will debut this Wednesday in Shadowman #5 in a new incarnation created by writer Justin Jordan and co-writer/artist Patrick Zircher.

In this new iteration, Dr. Mirage is the stage name of Shan Fong, a one-time television investigator of paranormal phenomena whose unique abilities make her an invaluable asset to police departments around the world. During the upcoming "Darque Reckoning" storyline – beginning on March 6th in Shadowman #5 – Fong steps into the world of Jack Boniface and the Shadowman after discovering that no matter where she goes, the dead only have one thing to say: "Master Darque is coming."

"Since the Summer of Valiant, we've been slowly building towards several key events. You can see the first of these events this April in Harbinger Wars, where Bloodshot and Harbinger collide," Valiant CEO and Chief Creative Officer Dinesh Shamdasani told the AP. "The return of Dr. Mirage is part of that plan — part of setting the stage. Dr. Mirage is a key piece in the future of the Valiant Universe and the timing of the return, as well as the manner, is no accident."

For more information on Shadowman, X-O Manowar, and the rest of the Valiant Universe, visit Valiant on Twitter, on Facebook, or at ValiantUniverse.com.

Eternal Descent Returns with Graphic Novel Volume 2

Have you some cut and paste!

"Continuing to explore the unholy alliance that has long existed between the worlds of heavy metal and fantasy comics, multi-media phenomenon ETERNAL DESCENT returns with the second volume of the much-heralded comic saga!

An ETERNAL DESCENT VOLUME 2 trailer is now online: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Jg944LA1Is

Collecting six single issues, an exclusive ‘Cobalt’ one-shot, and extensive art galleries into a 200-page graphic novel set for release in March 2013 by IDW Publishing and available for preorder worldwide, ETERNAL DESCENT VOLUME 2 immerses fans in a dark fantasy world where demons and angels battle for supremacy alongside some of the biggest names in metal, including Arch Enemy, Firewind, Periphery, and Joe Satriani!

With the fallen Sirian consigned to his fate and Lyra consumed by her inner demons, Loki’s designs draw ever closer to their terrible conclusion. As the conflict rips into the fabric of time, Gus G. returns with an unlikely guide, offering a glimmer of hope for our heroes… The disturbance reaches far across the universe and heralds the arrival of Joe Satriani, The Extremist, whose incredible energies bring balance to the cosmos, but leave our world consumed by Khaos magic. Michael Amott lies at the heart of this volatile new reality, empowered by mysterious amber artifacts and rivaled only by Misha Mansoor, a time-traveling wanderer wielding unparalleled technology! With lives lost, heroes reborn, and darkness rising, don’t miss the climactic resolution to  ETERNAL DESCENT VOLUME 2!

The brainchild of British guitarist and comic creator Llexi Leon, who has teamed with American animation veteran Shaun McLaughlin and DC Comics writer Justin Peniston to bring his unique artistic vision to fruition, Eternal Descent is set in a fantasy universe where lost souls lurk in every shadow, and darkness veils sinister designs. Heavy metal could be the key to salvation… or the gateway to destruction!

Offering comics, graphic novels, animated shorts, limited edition ESP guitars, a signature Digitech effects pedal and an upcoming video game to keep fans occupied, Eternal Descent is fast becoming an international phenomenon.

Set to become a 21st century cult classic, fans of comics and heavy metal alike will be staggered in the scale of Eternal Descent’s ambitions and the second volume of the cult comic series promises to plunge readers even more deeply into the graphic novel’s dark, multi-faceted world."

FYI - That New 52 Smell Progress

FYI
Preparing for DC content

First off lets get the unpleasant stuff out of the way.

DC Comics? They're just not going to respond to me, even after the DC themed podcasts launched. So I just need to plan accordingly.

News? Gathered by me for the New 52 cast.

Interviews? None. Sorry.

Review materials? That is all on me and my burden most certainly.

On the plus side... well I am sure being able to set my own pace, and review schedule is a plus if nothing else... oh well.

OK. Now onto actual progress. Trading for subscriptions is moving slowly apace, and while I do not want to jump ahead of myself until everything is all set up... I think we can at least mention progress.

To date two subscriptions have been put to bed set, Supergirl and Superman, a new trade is just starting that, if successful, add two more subscriptions to the schedule.

After that? April should hopefully see another two titles added for a total of six... so progress is definitely being made. Maybe too much progress, to much by far considering I am not getting so much as the time of day from DC... but I guess that is OK. Realistically a large dose of realistic expectations has to be applied in attempting to contacting a large publisher like DC.

Was the silent treatment expected? In some respects yes, sadly yes. I could stand for a higher profile, a bigger presense, more experience and seniority... or a Scrooge McDuck Money Vault.

Why is it I think only status and money gets a response? In truth even I think its exposure and readership, and I need to work harder to build up my readership. Still would it be such a thing just to send me a form email saying you have insufficient presense. Please build up your readership and observe the 12 to 24 month cooling period before resubmitting. Thank you for your interest, salutations and end email. But I dont even have that to show. It is just my opinion that I am insufficient to meet DC's standards for who has access. Well lets close out on a high note, what may be the final word on the review slate of the cast... ready? Yes voting is still ongoing and we are presently at the 40% mark, but... here is how I am seeing it... yes, this is subject to change.

Superman block
Reviewing Action Comics, Supergirl and Superman. Would have rounded it out with Superboy... if it was a subscription title.

Justice League block
Aquaman, Flash and JLAmerica

Finally Ladies Block with Batgirl, Catwoman and Wonder Woman.

Voting is still pending so stay tuned for updates.

OK things are falling into place but we are just waiting for the first arrivals and off we launch That New 52 Smell, so stay tuned.

See you next week!

New Spill It (PSP Trailers Edition) now available

Well let's see if we can do this once a month, the Playstation Network willing.
New Spill It (Trailers edition) is out, and this time out we're looking at the trailers for Iron Man 3 (both the trailer and the... ahem... extended look trailer), World War Z, Mud, Now You See Me, The Lone Ranger and more! Check it out!

If they put a good (or really horrible) show up on the Free TV Section of the TV Section? I will be "commenting" on it in an episode. So stay tuned for that.

Start of the Week

Start of the Week
Well once again another new week is upon us (ugh, woke up in not so cheery disposition but I should be feeling better by noon knock on wood) so lets see what is going on.

So March rolled in and the results of the first wave of publisher contacts is... mixed.

The best results came from IDW without a doubt. Followed by a decidedly sharp decline with Valiant (press releases only) and finally DC and MARVEL and the cold shoulder.

Well, best thing to do is be thankful for what I achieved and work with that. Thank you IDW and Valiant.

New policy on podcasts... comic edition
After abit of thought and reflection, as well as problems securing content, I decided to (strangely enough) take a page from the Republicans Post Office strategy and set a comic cast's schedule a year in advance through subscription. That way content is guaranteed and assured for a year of casts, which I figure is a good thing.

Presently the first cast I am working on with this new policy is That New 52 Smell, working to line up subscriptions prior to casting. As of right now? The first two titles are already subscribed to and set so we are on a roll. As for the next step? Over on the right we have polls up for you to vote on the next four titles that will be covered in That New 52 Smell. Voting ends March 22nd and I will announce the results here after the vote ends... stay tuned!

If this proves successful will I do a Marvel cast? Maybe. As I write this the weekend is upon us, and I should have set up a unique email just for This Old Comic Addict! How are we progressing with titles for That New 52 cast? Lets see...

So far? I scheduled nine slots for review.

- Through a large trade cycle I hope to secure six of the nine titles. We are presently 1/3rd of the way through, Supergirl and Superman on the docket for review.

The next batch? Probably start of April I will have an announcement on that. I have abit of my side of the deal to deliver on first, and you have some titles to vote on. Top two is in the next batch.

- Putting a pair of retro consoles and games up to secure two $34 subscriptions for the cast. Presently things are hopeful on this front... actually I think the trade is on. Hopefully these are secured by the end of the month ordering wise.

- And once we make more progress on those two fronts I will ponder the ninth title... but that is consideration for another time.

So all in all That New 52 Smell is off to a hopeful start. Progress report next week so stay tuned.

This week in articles?
This Old Comic Addict takes a look at the comic based on the Legion of Super Heroes animation.

Hopefully we have a Book Em Danno review material update as things roll in, and daily news. Otherwise words up so take care, and keep on reading!
